Joel Brown, LPC, NCC
Joel J. Brown is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). He received both his Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and his Master’s of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). As a doctoral candidate, pursuing his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from IUP, Joel approaches counseling from a predominantly humanistic, theoretical perspective and integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) tenets to supplement his humanistic approach. Joel has particular interest and expertise in working with individuals who represent marginalized groups, such as individuals representative of LGBTQ, sex offender, multiracial, and multiethnic populations. He has successfully collaborated with children, adolescents, and adults living with a variety of mental health challenges, including Personality Disorders; Bipolar and Related Disorders; Depressive Disorders; Anxiety; Trauma – Stressor Related Disorders; Adjustment Disorders; Gender Dysphoria; Disruptive; Impulse-Control; Conduct Disorders; and Substance Use Disorders achieve their education, career, mental health, and wellness goals. With a strong professional counselor identity, Joel attempts to create facilitative, relational conditions that aid his clients’ forward toward optimal wellness. By placing significance on identifying and honoring his clients’ strengths and individual attributes, Joel utilizes both humor and his clients’ uniqueness in his clinical work, in an effort to raise and sustain his clients’ level of self and “other” awareness.
